The Home Depot Foundation created the Awards of Excellence program in order to identify, recognize and showcase the outstanding and innovative work of nonprofit organizations across the country in the areas of affordable housing built responsibly and public-private partnerships using sustainable development strategically to create healthier more vibrant communities.
The overarching goals of the Award of Excellence program is not only to celebrate the achievements of local organizations, but also to provide opportunities for our nonprofit partners – both new and existing – to share their experiences, key learnings, challenges and best practices.
The Foundation hopes these signature programs will also inspire other nonprofit housing developers to integrate responsible building design into their projects as well as increase the public’s general knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the overwhelming benefits of both affordable housing and sustainable community development in creating healthier, more livable communities.

Awards of Excellence for Community TreesIn 2006, in partnership with the US Conference of Mayors, the Awards of Excellence for Community Trees was created to identify, recognize and showcase the success and benefits of public/private partnerships in developing healthy communities through tree plantings. The goal was to share outstanding examples of successful collaborations between nonprofit organizations and cities to demonstrate that healthy, safe and economically vibrant communities can be achieved through innovative and strategic planning and successful implementation of tree planting programs. The Home Depot Foundation understands and recognizes the pivotal role trees play in improving quality of life, and in order to encourage nonprofit partners and government officials to carry forward the integration of green infrastructure into our communities, in 2009 The Home Depot Foundation created the Awards of Excellence for Sustainable Community Development program which incorporates the community trees discipline and shows that truly sustainable projects take a holistic, integrated approach, whereby sustainability planning, affordable housing and the creation of green spaces and planting of trees are inextricably linked.
