Volunteers from The Home Depot, Park Pride Join Forces To Renovate Atlanta’s Spink Collins Park on National “United We Serve” Days
On Friday, September 11, more than 100 volunteers from The Home Depot and the Riverside neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia worked to completely refurbish and revitalize Spink-Collins Park, an overgrown, forgotten 21.49-acre park. This was the third of five work days throughout 2009 to improve Spink-Collins Park and make it a signature greenspace in the City of Atlanta.
Mayor Shirley Franklin, The Home Depot Foundation President Kelly Caffarelli, Park Pride Executive Director George Dusenbury rolled up their sleeves and joined the other volunteers as they worked to build a series of looping soft- and hard-surface paths and boardwalks, an outdoor classroom, a grass meadow and a small pavilion to anchor the trails.

Team Depot Does Some Dirty Work at Oakhurst Community Garden in Atlanta
On September 3, 2009, nearly 60 Team Depot volunteers from the Finance Department at the Store Support Center, got some real dirty work done at the Oakhurst Community Garden in the Decatur community of Metro Atlanta. This community garden teaches local students the importance of taking care of our environment through hands-on gardening.
Volunteers, including EVP & CFO Carol Tomé who is an avid gardener, made some significant improvements to Oakhurst Community Garden:
- Created a new bog garden
- Used crushed gravel to create a foundation for a new greenhouse that will be built over the next few months
- Built 2 picnic tables
- Assembled 3 wheelbarrows which were bought at a local Home Depot store and donated to the garden
- Pruned trees, mulched, pulled weeds and other general gardening tasks (bought and donated some tools to the garden for this task)
- Created a community gardening plot

The day was summed up perfectly by Santiago Bernardez, The Home Depot’s District Manager for the Sun Coast. Note that included in his thank you message is a reminder that they will all be out volunteering again on September 19th for a coastal clean up! Giving back is truly part of our associates’ DNA.
Team, I wanted to say thank you to all that attended today’s Team Depot at Habitat for Humanity. Special thanks to Kelli Tawney (District Team Depot captain) for all the work to make it a successful event (I really appreciate it).
Remember we have a coastal clean up on the 19th and we’ll be cooking out so get the word out – it will be fun! Thanks again for living our values and “Giving Back”. |

Team Depot Revamps Facility for Sun Coast Habitat for Humanity
When Habitat for Humanity on Florida’s Sun Coast needed some repairs to its facility, associates at Home Depot’s stores in District 115 came to the rescue. Habitat’s facility serves as important hub for organizing the house builds the organization does throughout the year, training volunteers, and educating new homeowners. It also serves as a Habitat ReStore, where excess building materials and donated goods are sold to the general public at a fraction of the retail price to help local Habitat affiliates fund the construction of Habitat homes within their communities.
On September 3, 2009, District Team Depot Captain Kelli Tawney organized the troops and made an amazing day of service happen. Team Depot volunteers showcased not only their passion for community service, but also their ‘know-how’ skills. Check out the list of work they got done in one day! No wonder the orange apron is a welcoming symbol to so many of our customers!

- Landscaping and lawn maintenance
- Tiled two rooms
- Installed blinds, window film, and several other interior projects
- Installed interior doors
