SAN ANTONIO -- Families will soon have new affordable housing options on the city's Southwest side, thanks to the hard work of some volunteers.

On Wednesday, 500 volunteers from Home Depot spent the day helping build new homes in the new Palo Alto subdivision, near Highway 16. It's an ongoing Habitat for Humanity project that's helping make the dream of home ownership come true for low income families.

Henry and Antoinette Perez were on site, watching the walls be put up on their future home. They said they couldn't help but imagine the future.

"The holidays, especially," said Henry. "Around Christmas time, opening the presents in our home (is) going to be fantastic."

The couple has been married three years but have been living with parents. They said they were unable to afford their own home until they qualified for help from Habitat for Humanity.

"It's a self-help program, so they come out and build on their own houses and build on their neighbors houses and at the end of the process, they purchase the home for zero percent interest mortgage," said Stephanie Wiese, with Habitat for Humanity.

Wiese said volunteers help build the homes and materials are donated, so costs are kept low.

The Perez family will only pay about $400 per month for their house.

"What Habitat feels is that home ownership is so important and crucial for families to have a stable environment and a great place for their kids to grow up," said Wiese.

Having a home to start a family is exactly what the Perez family said they are looking forward to.

Eventually, 282 families will have homes in the Palo Alto subdivision. Construction in the neighborhood began in 2005. About three-quarters of the homes are already complete and being lived in. The subdivision will be complete by the middle of next year, Wiese said.

SAN ANTONIO -- People say home ownership is part of the 'American dream,' and Habitat for Humanity made that dream come true for some San Antonio families Wednesday.

Habitat for Humanity is partnering with Home Depot to build four eco-friendly homes in the Palo Alto community. Construction on the last two began Wednesday as 500 volunteers, including Mayor Julián Castro, showed up to help.

The 282 homes are expected to be completed by the middle of next year. The four in the Palo Alto community will be finished by August.
