Framing Hope, a Material Difference
Our product donation program diverts excess Home Depot store inventory away from landfills and into the homes and lives of thousands of people across the country each year.
We call our program “Framing Hope,” and, since its inception in 2008, more than $100 million of product has been donated to 1,500 local nonprofit organizations reaching nearly 500,000 low-income families. The program is operated in partnership with The Home Depot and Good 360.
In addition to its social impact, Framing Hope also has a significant economic and environmental impact. A recent study conducted by the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University concluded that the program has saved more than $1.4 million in energy costs including:
- Landfill space and volume equivalent to approximately 2,500 garbage trucks
- Manufacturing energy savings are enough to power 119 homes for one year
- Consumption energy savings of more than 3,300,000 kWh, which translates to a reduction in CO2 emissions equivalent to planting 517 acres of pine forest
Through the Framing Hope Program, local nonprofit organizations are partnered with local Home Depot stores to receive donated materials. The nonprofits then use those products to repair, refurbish, and rebuild nearby homes and facilities benefitting deserving families and individuals. For instance:
- Fired Up Sisters works to rebuild homes, in the San Diego area, that were affected by the 2007 wildfires that swept through California
- Mending Hearts Charities, in the greater Orlando area, has helped more than 50 once homeless families move into affordable housing
- Several Rebuilding Together affiliates have refurbished homes for disabled veterans
To increase the program’s impact, The Home Depot and Gifts In Kind launched a warehouse strategy in 2009. Today there are four Framing Hope Warehouses in Buffalo, NY; Houston, TX; Los Angeles, CA and Phoenix, AZ that partner multiple Home Depot stores with large nonprofit organizations that have the logistical capability to redistribute the products to a wide range of smaller nonprofit organizations. For example, 7 Home Depot stores donate products to the Buffalo Framing Hope Warehouse, which serves a total of 65 small nonprofit organizations.
