AFFORDABLE HOUSING BUILT RESPONSIBLY

Housing Assistance Council (HAC)
The Housing Assistance Council, the preeminent rural intermediary, has been helping local organizations build affordable homes in rural America since 1971. The Housing Assistance Council emphasizes local solutions, empowerment of the poor, reduced dependence and self-help strategies. Through HAC's loan fund, it has made 1,754 loans totaling $186.6 million for the financing of over 58,497 units of safe, decent and affordable housing in rural areas. HAC also provides extensive technical assistance, training, and research and information products. A HAC subsidiary created in 1982, Rural Housing Services, Inc. helped develop 20 low-income housing tax credit rental projects with almost 800 units in eight states.
The Home Depot Foundation is providing HAC grant support for its Green Fund regranting program that focuses on building the capacity of rural practitioners to incorporate green building design and building techniques in their development work. The Foundation also supported the production of HAC's Rural Voices fall 2005 quarterly magazine that was devoted entirely to greening rural housing.
